Question : Moving Linux Bind to Windows 2003 DNS
Hello .. inherited a Linux network and I'm moving it to all windows environment (since I'm a newbie in Linux). The past admin configured 2 Debian DNS server (BIND), primary and secondary. I have a Windows 2003 AD Domain controller and would like to configure this as my primary DNS server and configure another Windows 2003 server as a secondary server.
Can anybody out there give some steps/advise on how to go about this...i.e., where do I find the DNS info in Debian, how to move this DNS, etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Answer : Moving Linux Bind to Windows 2003 DNS
Are you sure you really wanto to do that? I mean, Bind is a bad beast to tame - and you really have to update it from time to time - but I suppose we're speaking about public dns here. So you're going to expose your domain controller to the internet.. not a good idea indeed.
If it's for internal use only then ok: you can (usually, depending on the config the previous admin has done) find the zone files in /etc/named and their definitions and any special configuration in named.conf (/etc/named/named.conf). Try with a locate bind or locate named.conf (after an updatedb command) as root to exactly locate the file. You should be able to identify the zones imported from the config file and then just migrate the various zones in windows by hand (if there's just a few of them).
