Question : WINS database corrupted twice.
|
|
We have a single NT server and about 3 months ago our WINS database corrupted bringing down the server. We restored the WINS database from the backup and WINS started fine. Last night the WINS database corrupted again also bringing down the server. We attempted to restore from the backup WINS database but it also was corrupted. We were forced to start with a clean database, fortunatley we have very few entries.
Can anyone explain why our WINS database has corrupted twice, the second time the backup database was also corrupted. The only correlation we can determine is that in each case the server had been rebooted a day or two prior to the corruption

I have a single WINS serever with 4 other servers running. My WINS was corrupting about ever 6 months. Microsoft had me make the following changes:
1. On the WINS server, make sure that it is listed in the TCP/IP settings of the server as both the primary and secondary WINS server (do not leave the secondary blank) So if your WINS server is 10.1.10.1 you would go into the network configuration/TCP/IP Protocol properties/WINS Address Tab. Enter 10.1.10.1 (your wins server address) in both the primary and secondary WINS server address.
2. Under WINS Manager on the server, Mapping/Static Mappings. Make sure that you are not using static mappings for anything exept Non-Microsoft devices (Unix) boxes for instance. Even if you are static mapping printers or workstations, do not have them here. Clear all static mappings to Microsoft machines.
