Question : Win2000 does not prompt for username and password when I try to access a shared folder in Win XP from said Win2000 machine
|

This only happen in 1 machine. I have set the file sharing permission of my windows XP shared folder so that only user ABC can access my shared folder from the network. I have also remove 'everyone' from my permission list. In PC1(Win2000), when I try to access the windows XP machine (by double clicking the computer icon for the WinXP machine in the Network Neighbourhood), windows will prompt me for a username and password. After I entered ABC and the appropriate password, I was allowed entry and I can access the shared folder in it. But when I try this on PC2(Win2000), I was not prompted for a username and password when I double click the computer icon but was allowed entry straight away. The problem now is that I cannot access the shared folder within. A messsage stating that I did not have permission to access this folder appeared instead. I try logging off and restarting PC2 but it's still the same. What is the cause of this? Is there any configuration in PC2 that have been set so that it automatically provide a specific username and password to the winXP without prompting the user? Or is it the setting in WinXP instead?
Please help. Thank You

You can tell that the proper protocols are installed on PC2 because it can open the shared folder from the XP box. TCP/IP is enough, NetBEUI is not needed, nor does the client (PC2 in this case) need to have file sharing installed.
In the NT world (includes both 2000 and XP), it will first try to login to the other machine with the same login name and password you're logged in locally with. So if the username you login to PC2 with is the same as an administrator on the XP box, then you'll have admin rights.
You can specify a username other than the one you have, but not once you've already connected. Double clicking on the share will connect you so this is a bit of a pain to work around.
- Reboot PC2 and login to it normally, but don't connect to the XP box. - Right-click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive... - Pick the drive letter you want and specify the path to the server e.g. \\xpbox\sharename - Check the Reconnect at logon box - Click the words "different user name" - In this dialog, specify ABC and its password - Click OK, then Finish
If all goes well, a window to the folder on the XP box should open. If not, post back here with what went wrong.
