Question : Problems pinging a networked computer
|
|
NOTE: Based on my previous experiences here, I am going to tell quite a story to describe everything in the first place, because it seems like I have to do that anyway. I apologize if it is a bit long, but doubly thank you for spending the time to help me!
Before going into my problem, let me explain my network a little bit:
I am running Smoothwall as my DHCP Server/Router/Firewall that connects to my Charter Cable Modem externally and to my network internally with IP address 192.168.1.1.
At the heart of my network is a D-Link DI-624 wireless router. I have all routing/DHCP/etc. functions disabled on the DI-624, and use it as a wireless hub. Its IP is 192.168.1.254.
I have three computers connected to my network:
--The primary is running Windows XP and is set to the static IP of 192.168.1.20. --I have a server hosting Turnkey Linux's MediaWiki edition with static IP of 192.168.1.10. --I have a wireless netbook running Windows XP with a floating DHCP address.
Now for the Problem:
Yesterday, I could access the MediaWiki server just fine from the netbook. I could ping it, and I could access its hosted content.
Today, when doing some physical cleaning around my servers (firewall and MediaWiki), I discovered that the ethernet cable connected to the MediaWiki server is a little sensitive, and when pushed the wrong way will become disconnected (ie there is a short in the wire that I can "fix" by shifting the wire the right way). Since I am cheap and don't have any spare ethernet cables lying around, I "fixed" the problem and went on my way. However, when I tried to access the MediaWiki server from my netbook, I was unable to do so. Thinking that it was a problem with the ethernet cable, I re-adjusted it, but no luck. I then restarted the MediaWiki server, which came up showing connected in the booting process. I tested my connection to the MediaWiki server using the primary computer, and it worked: I could access all content and everything was good. However, I was still unable to access it from my netbook.
My first step to troubleshoot the problem was the simple ping test, but that gave some surprising results:
--The primary pc is able to ping all computers and network equipment just fine (including the MediaWiki server) EXCEPT for the netbook. --The netbook is able to ping eveyrthing EXCEPT the MediaWiki server.
Both computers can access the internet just fine. I'm not sure why data is only going "one-way" over the wireless link. Even if I disable the firewall on the netbook (I use Comodo firewall), I still can't ping it. Also, why can the netbook see the firewall if it can't see the MediaWiki server. The netbook is essentially the same "distance" from both of them, but it can only see one of them? I tried switching ports on the wireless router, but that didn't work. I also tried a different, static IP on the netbook, but that made no difference?
My question: What is going on, and how can I fix it? Just thinking out loud, I image its something more than a bumped cable.
Thanks in advanced for everyone willing to read this novel and help me with my problem.

Believe it or not, after spending nearly 2 hours troubleshooting the thing, running up and down stairs, and tying this long message, the issue just resolved itself seconds after hitting submit.
I hereby close this topic.
