Question : Using a Specific NIC for Internet Explorer in Dual NIC System

Hello,

I have two NICs in my Windows XP Pro system. Each is on its own router and subnet connected to one ComCast modem. (I can explain how to do that if anyone is interested.) Now I want IE to use a specific NIC, a specific subnet, for internet traffic and not the other. Is there anyway to force IE or the system to use a particular NIC without disabling the other. The other is going to be used by VMWare virtual machines.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer : Using a Specific NIC for Internet Explorer in Dual NIC System

I would statically assign the IP addresses.  Then the NIC you wish the IE to go over, add the Router IP as the Gateway for the correct IP.

For instance, lets say you have Router A and Router B.
Router A = 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0
Router B = 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0

And you want IE to use router B.

Then...
NIC A(plugged into Router A) IP:192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0 with an EMPTY gateway
NIC B(plugged into Router B) IP:192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 with a gateway of 192.168.1.1

Now you may think "How is my VmWare system going to see the gateway?"  The answer is "It's completely independant from the system it's running on" as long as you're VmWare Nic is using the "Bridged" interface.  Then you can assign the VMOS the ip of 192.168.0.3 with a gateway of 192.168.0.1 (or DHCP) and it will then use Router A.
