Question : connecting 2 computers together

Ok, I really dont know how to explain this, so here goes..
What I want to do is to connect 2 computers (laptops) together with a telephone line. One of them has Windows 2000 Professional. The other has Windows NT 4.0. How would I go about doing it? Or isn't it possible?? Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

don't know if NT supports infared. If it does, then you should be able to
best bet, get two NIC (network adapter cards also known as network interface cards)
and a crossover cable
and set up an ethernet network
