Question : Accessing Web server behind NAT (Thomson Speedtouch 510)

Hello, I have set up a web server on my personal computer. I have tried setting one up using IIS (on port 80) and also with abyss web server (on port 8000). I can access both servers through a web browser withing the network e.g. 127.0.0.1:8000.

I have set up NAPT (port forwarding) on the router to allow traffic from port 8000 to be redirected to the webserver on my computer using the following settings-

The problem that I have is that the connection always times out when I try to access the website using my outside IP address e.g. http://outsideip:8000.

I know that the port is open because I have scanned it using "shields up" at grc.com.

I am also sure that something is getting through because when I have kapersky antivirus running I get a warning about a hacking attempt whenever I try and access the site. (I'm tring to access the website via the outside IP address from the computer that the web server is running on)

I have tried it with both software firewall and antivirus disabled.

I'm running XP pro.

Thanks, Jon

Answer : Accessing Web server behind NAT (Thomson Speedtouch 510)

Jon,

The problem you need to be using different IP scheme in your internal network.  192.0.0.4 routes to the isi.edu network even though it's an invalid address on that network that's where the communication gets lost.  Please change your internal network to 192.168.0.0 and then change the redirect to 192.168.0.4, this should then route your traffic to your internal machine instead of attempting to route it back out the internet to a non-existent ip address.

If you'd rather you can use 10.0.0.0....  The problem you have right now is that you're using public IPs for your internal network.

Cheers,

Chris
