Question : Problem using Linksys wrt54g router as access point.
|
|
I am trying to configure the Linksys router as an access point but I can't get it to work. I am trying to connect to my existing hybrid network but I need further assistance. I currently have a wr850g motorola wireless router running the entire network. I am trying to connect to this network using a wrt54g linkysys router.
Problem: I am trying to connect a laptop that can't utilize the wifi card because of security reasons at work. Therefore I am trying to bypass by connecting via ethernet cable and utilizing the wireless function of the router.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Greetings ctrevino30,
So you need to connect your wireless router, the Linksys, via ethernet cable to the motorola router? That should work fine. You need to connect the WAN port on the Linksys to any of the ports on your motorola router. The motorola will assign an IP address to the Linksys and the Linksys will create a subnetwork for its wireless clients (your laptop). You can also setup the Linksys as a simple access point.
Either way, you need to assign it a new SSID and enable the highest variety of security your hardware can support (WPA is preferred). However, it'll be easier to diagnose problems if you configure the laptop and the Linksys under low security settings first, then increase them.
Also, are you sure it won't be a violation of company policy to setup this access point?
Good luck, -Yohan
