Hello,

I'm at my wits end with this problem, please someone help me!

Right, first of all my ipconfig /all

My problem is I want my sharepoint site to e-mail alerts to users.

Now I don't have exchange, so want to use a gmail account to send the emails.

I've read lots of tutorials on how to do this and think this bit is set up correctly.

I have SMTP service installed, and relay, and smart host etc all filled in.

Now when someone changes something on sharepoint, all I get is one of these delivered to my gmail account.....

*** START ***

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

      madeupemail@commercebusinesssystems.co.uk

Final-Recipient: rfc822;madeupemail@commercebusinesssystems.co.uk
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Blah blah

*** END ***

Now I know my e-mail domain is commercebusinesssystems.co.uk and my FQDN is hq.commercebusinesssystems.co.uk so could this be the problem?  Do I need some kind of MX record?

Please explain in detail if I do, because I don't know how!

Sorry for the long post!

Dave.

Answer : Help needed with sharepoint using gmail as smart host

Nevermind - i've sorted the problem eventually!

If anyone else gets the same problem....

The problem in the first place was that I couldn't use 1and1 as a smart host as it rejected my e-mails with some kind of spam filter (dynamic ip address).

Thats why I tried with gmail - but all emails returned with an NDR notification email instead.

I then dug out my ISP information and found we get our internet service from BT Business.

I placed their smtp address in the smart host box instead ( mail.btconnect.com ) and the e-mails flew straight out of sharepoint to the people intended!

So I can now sleep at night!
