Question : GPS device plugin to router

Hi all,

On board a vehicle I have a wireless 3G router. What I'd like to do is implement a GPS system that will plug directly into the router and report back data.

I need some guidance in a GPS product that can do this, and also if there is software for it that can be installed on a pc and view the vehicle's movements, all being fed back through the 3G router.

many thanks in advance

Answer : GPS device plugin to router

Without using a laptop in conjunction with a gps receiver and your router, you won't be able to do this.  The only way you can do it without the need of a laptop as a go between is to use a router with a built in GPS receiver or a router with a usb port and the ability to connect to a usb GPS receiver.

Here are some options for hardware:

Not sure which country your in so some of these may or may not work for your area.

the first 3 are routers with built in GPS receivers, the last is a wifi enabled gps receiver.

To be honest, these solutions are probably WAY more expensive than what you are willing to go for.  They are designed for fleet tracking solutions.  To be honest, you would probably be better off with the personal realtime vehicle tracking services that are out there.

Just a thought, because of their small size and being relatively cheap, using a netbook in conjunction with your 3G router might be an acceptable option for you.

Either way i wish you the best of luck.
