the gateway contains its gateway hardware and gateway software. the hardware should be located between GSM network and the internet, the software should be a two-way software installed on the hardware.

sometimes a WAP server is considered as a WAP gateway, and sometimes a WAP server might be considered as just a web server dedicated for WAP users. this may make people confused. for the 2nd definition, a WAP client certainly does not need a gateway to access the WAP server.
