Question : Multiple default gateways
I'm looking for feedback regarding configuring xp based worksations with two default gateways in a failover manner. How well does this work? How does this perform when service outage is sourced beyond the gateway?
Answer : Multiple default gateways
My experience with multiple gateways in Windows is not good. Even with properly assigned gateway metrics, there are long delays causing timeouts before Windows decides to try the next gateway. I have found it to be very problematic.
What we use is multiple ISPs with BGP routing. This of course is assuming you are routing gateways to the internet.
"How does this perform when service outage is sourced beyond the gateway?" - Windows has no way of knowing what's going on beyond the gateway and I think that is one reason that is does not work well. Again, BGP routing works because it keeps a heartbeat on the routes involved.
All of course, IMHO.
