Question : Wireless Question about a 3COM 8760 Access Point
|
|
We're just installing wireless access in our high school and we bought 30 3COM POE Access Points Model 8760 11a/b/g
I understand how to set it up and protect it with a key.
What I'd also like to to is hide the SSID? For example if the SSID is "schoolwireless" I want that to exist, but not be broadcast to devices. I thought there might be a broadcast on or off, but there is only a radio on or off and if I turn that off then that is turning the wireless off essentially correct?
I just don't want kids to even know the SSID so they don't try hacking the WPA password. Is there a way to do this and does anyone have the same model of access point that could shed some light on where to do this?
Thanks!
M.

This was from 3com's site: Access Point 8200,8250,8500,8700,8750,8760,7250 - Can the broadcast SSID be disabled to improve security? Problem: Can the broadcast SSID be disabled to improve security? Problem: Unauthorized users accessing network Fact: Broadcast security Fact: Disable SSID
Fix: Update the Access Point using firmware 2.3.6 or later. Firmware version 2.3.6 and later allow the SSID broadcast to be disabled. To obtain the latest Access Point firmware visit the 3Com web site using the following URL: www.3com.com
And a direct link to the downloads section for this make/model: http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?selected=all&sort=effdt&sku=3CRWE876075&order=desc
Hope that helps, -- Chris
