Question : WRV54G Quick VPN on a PPPoA network

Hi,

I have a WRV54G running via a Linksys ADSL2MUE modem.  I can't get Quick VPN to run.  My ISP tells me the network type is PPPoA, however I CAN get full internet connectivity using the WRV54G which only supports PPPoE! via the ADSL modem.  I believe the modem does not support a DMZ or port forwarding, therefore can anyone tell me what modem I need and how to configure this to pass on any requests to the WRV54G so I can get QuickVPN to run?

Many thanks

Andy

Answer : WRV54G Quick VPN on a PPPoA network

Andy, I'm afraid you won't get the QuickVPN client or any client working until the router is more or less visible from the internet. I believe your only option is to replace the modem or router.

The normal method to configure your VPN would be to put the Modem (which is a combined modem/router) in bridged or pass through mode and configure the router with the WAN connection information. In your case, as you have found out, the WRV54G does not support PPPoA connections, at least not yet, perhaps future firmware updates it will.

The other option is to configure the router behind the modem as a VPN server and port forward the appropriate VPN related packets to the router. However, the ADSL2MUE does not support port forwarding. The modem would have to have port forwarding and VPN pass through capabilities.

In a previous post lepre63, also in Europe, had the same issue. Linksys recommended he replace his modem with an AG241 modem which apparently supports port forwarding.

If possible I would prefer changing the router to one that supports PPPoA so that once the Modem was configured as a bridge the router would effectively sit on the Internet. However, either method should work. I am not terribly familiar with PPPoA connections as they are not available here. Your best bet would be to have a Linksys support technician make a recommendation as to the best combination of router and modem.

Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
