I posted this originally under Ubuntu but no one has been able to solve the problem so her it is for the Windows experts as I feel it is probably a problem with my Windows Network set up which is preventing access. According to Ubuntu it should show the machines of a Windows Network "out of the bo" imediately after installing Ubuntu. My installation does no do so as an initial start point.
Original question:
I have a fully functional 5 machine Windows P to P Network. No login user or password needed. Network is named "ARW". Been trying for months to connect a 6th machine (DiduUbuntu) with Ubuntu 8.04 installed(Fully updated). Have Samba installed etc Problem: I can access the DiduUbuntu machine from any Win machine as it appears in MS/Windows Networks/Workgroup. Can access, copy, amend files to and from DiduUbuntu from any Win machine.
From the DiduUbuntu machine I select Places/Network and Nautilus shows icons for "DiduUbuntu" and "Windows Network" (Location network///:) Double click on DiduUbuntu and can access all my documents which I copied across from a Win machine. Double click "Windows Network and the location changes to smb///: and shows icons for the ARW network and the Workgroup network Double click on "Workgroup" and I can access all the files on DiduUbuntu".
Now the problem:- All the help documents I have read state that "out of the box" a double click on the "ARW" icon should open up the Windows ARW Network and show an icon for each machine. Unfortunately it does not.. I have a new location shown of smb://arw/ but no machine icons displayed so I am unable to access any windows machines from DiduUbuntu. All drives on the Win machines are set to allow shares.
I am a complete and utter newbie as far as Ubuntu is concerned but am trying to get this going in order to gradually change over from Windows to Ubuntu over a period of time (as some of my programs will not work under Ubuntu ie my accounts package)
I would be very grateful if someone can put their finger on where I am going wrong as it seems to me that Windows is blocking access to DiduUbuntu. I have switched off my firewall on all machines and it makes no difference. I have also searched the web and drawn down numerous tracts however they all are much too complicated for a newbie like me. It seems strange that the Ubuntu from Windows bit I have sorted out, but the Ubuntu to Windows bit which is supposed to work out of the box does not. By the way I did install Nautilus-share. I also note that I do not have the "Shared Folders" icon mentioned in a few write ups. I also can not access any Win Printers.
