Question : How to connect 2 PC's together using a cross over cable then connect them both to the internet

Hiya there,

Im after a little help please.

I have recently just bought a new PC and am wanting to to network the 2 PC's together and run them both through the same ISP provider but on one line if thats understandable i am with NTL in the NE of England and im connected through a cable connection. The way im looking at setting it up is running a USB  cable from my PC into the back of the Modem then from the PC to the other PC. The latter of that i think i have as i have connected them together via the Cross over cable and through 2 Ethernet cards.

The problem im getting is that my first machine when connecting the Modem through USB is asking for software would this be right as at present i am connecting it through a standard connection into the back of the ethernet card.

Hopefully you can make sense of this and can help an idiot when it comes to computers.

Thanks in advance

Darren

Do yourself a favor and get a cable/dsl router.  Linksys makes fine ones. Get yourself one with a built in 4 port switch.  Here in the states they run about $50 US.

You won't have the hassle of installing multiple network cards and configuring Windows XP Internet Sharing tools.

The Cable Modem connects to the linksys router via ethernet.

Then both your PCs also connect to the Linksys via ethernet.  The linksys will share the connection for you and offer you some decent protection from intruders.
