Question : Best way to remote access network/computer?
|
|
Any suggestions on the best and most cost effective way to remotely access a computer on a LAN behind a Linksys router? We currently have a dynamic IP but could easily upgrade to a static IP if necessary.
My thoughts are that it might be easiest to use a linux box running clarkconnect or something like that. Or does PCAnywhere make this easy as well?
Thanks for the help!

Hi, Now first thing is to get past the LinkSys router. This includes a built in firewall right? ( I am considering buying one of these but dont have one yet but I am familiar with the technology as I have done this with a cisco firewall.)
There should be a configuration page for the Linksys. You will need to enable a port in order to connect through it. The best way is to use VPN which just happens to be included with w2k and win xp. (hope you have one of these flavors!) Also, some routers will actually set up the port AND VPN connection entirely! Check it out! You will need the IP to connect and so a static IP would be a requirement.
K, so now that you can get past the LinkSys you need to connect.
You state "effective way to remotely access a computer on a LAN behind a Linksys router"?
Sounds like you just need to access the Hard drive or other device on the remote computer, yes? Well then you are done, VPN will make the connection and updates your local routing table.
Just browse the network and you will see the remote computer! Thats it!
If you want you could use VNC to actually connect and remotely control the remote computer. Just start VNC and punch in the remote machines IP.
NOte: If this is a business machine, you should be aware of the new security laws recently effective regulating the transmision of personable identifiable information in electronic form. Dont break any laws now or get fined.
To recap:
You need ------ W2K or WXP Enable an open port on the LinkSys Create a VPN connection on the machine accessing the remote computer Get a Static IP
If you need specific info on creating the VPN connection try the online help. It real easy, just liek making a dial up connection, in fact it is the same wizard.
