Question : Delayed write failure writing to a netware drive
|
|
We have a XP home computer running Novell's most recent client software accesing a drive on a Netware 5 server. The workstation is running autocad 2000 and cannot save a .dwg (drawing) file to the network without getting an error message.
The error message says that it cannot save the file to the specified location and that the file has been saved as a .AC$ file. Then a delayed write error messge pops up in Windows.
The user has full rights to the directory. We can save a document in word and in notepad to that directory.
The Novell client was uninstalled (along with IPX/SPX) and reinstalled.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

First mistake is running ACAD 2000 on XP >HOME< !!! Second mistake is connecting to a business network with >XP HOME< !!! This is not a Redmond-supported use in ANY case, regardless of WHAT's on the back end of your network.
Regardless, you can probably get this to kinda work by using the Novell client32 4.9 SP1a with the "B" patch, installing it using custom install, selecting only the services you need/have in place... Do NOT use the Microsoft-provided crapware excuse for a client. It is deliberately crippled to try to make NetWare look bad.
You should NOT have to use IPX with a NetWare 5 server, unless it was configured that way for some reason. Either way, only choose one protocol.
If you stick with IPX, in the IPX protocol properties, select the frame type and specify the IPX network number - don't let the lousy Microsoft-supplied IPX stack do an auto-detect.
Then, go into the properties of the Novell client, in the Advanced Settings tab, and change "File Caching" to "OFF" and "File Commit" to "ON." The problem you're having is caused by the difference between how ACAD expects a file to be closed and how WinXP closes a file by default. The setting change should fix that.
