Question : I want to share my HP4050 over a home network

Hi there,

Here is the equipment I have:

- Home PC (P4, 1GHz, network card, etc)
- Belkin wireless F5D-7230-4 router
- SpeedTouch ADSL modem
- HP LaserJet 4050 printer with Jetdirect network card
- ASUS laptop (wireless, network card, etc)

Current setup:

The Belkin wireless router is connected to the Speedtouch modem,
My PC is connected to the internet via the Belkin router (CAT5).
My laptop is connected to the internet via the Belkin router (wireless).
The HP4050 printer is connected to the PC via the paralel port.

What I want to achieve:

I'd like to connect my HP4050 printer to the Belkin wireless router (via CAT5), so that my desktop and laptop can print independently. Rather than share the printer via my desktop.

Is that possible?

Answer : I want to share my HP4050 over a home network

Yes its totally possible.

1)Plug your Printer into your router
2)Configure it an IP address outside fo your DHCP range. e.g. 192.168.1.1 is your router make it 192.168.1.200 or something far out like that.
3)Now on your main computer goto printers
4)Add printer
5)Local Printer (untick the the "automatic detect plug n play)
6)Create A new port
7)Choose "Standard TCP/IP Port" (a new window will open)
8)Enter the IP address that you specified above for the printer
9) When you hit next if it is a HP printer with a jetdirect it "Should" detect it as a jet direct port
10)If it does great follow the wizard and you got yourself a network printer.
10a)if ti doesnt simply select a jet direct port form the list it provides and then follow the wizard.

11)You can either share this out from the server by right clicking on the printer and choosing sharing or you can follow teh same steps as above on any other computers on your network and they will have the networked printer installed as alocal useable(regardless of what other computers are switched off) printer!

Thanks

Antony
