Question : Wireless Network setup with DSL line

I have a computer running on a DSL connection

Its a sprint DSL modem  and Earthlink is the provider
A phone cord runs from the modem to the wall jack
A patch cable runs from the modem to the back of my computer

The computer is running windows xp pro

I want to set up a laptop to be able to get internet connection wirelessly.

I ran a test the other day I unpluged the patch cable from the computer and connected it to a smc ez access point
I then enabled wireless connection on my laptop which has a wireless nic
I searched for available networks and it wouldn't pick up the dsl connection

what am I doing wrong

Do I need to connected the patch cable from the dsl modem to a router and from the router to my desktop and access point  for my laptop to see the wireless network

based on this setup how can I get my laptop to view the dsl connection wirelessly?
