Question : SBS 2003 Remote File Sharing problem

Have a SBS 2003 server with shared directories.  Can get to them locally but not via the internet.  Can Telnet to the ports (137, 138, 139, 445) locally but get no response from outside the network.  Have the ports open and redirected on the router.  Have also changed the SBS Windows Firewall Administrative template so that the "Allow file and printer exception" is enabled and allows messages from the external network (it is the same settings as "Allow remote desktop exception" which allows access from the external network).

Not sure if traffic is being blocked at the Router or the Domain server.

Michael.

Answer : SBS 2003 Remote File Sharing problem

You won't be able to share these folders that way through a firewall - and if you were - it woud be a huge security issue.

You do have some choices though - you can pulish these folders in IIS, install and configure FTP, and use the company web (SharePoint). FTP will be the easiest & least secure - then a webdav folder published in IIS and best & most secure - SharePoint. Both webdav and Sharepoint can use port 80 - so you donlt have to open additional ports.

Here's an aricle about webdav
