Question : How can I hide a one workgroup from another on the same network
|
|
Hi, I am looking after a peer to peer network of 12 computers split into two workgroups, admin and users.
I want "admin" to see all computers with full administration rights but I don't want the "users" group to see the "admin" workgroup at all. I want them to be able to access all computers in their own workgroup only.
Is there any way I can hide the "admin" workgroup?
Admin should be using passwords to protect their stuff but they don't want passwords at all. I guess that would be the easiest and best way. Any help much appreciated.

Well, I've been sitting here for several minutes going through options in my head... There isn't really a way to restrict which workgroups show up for certain workstations on the same network as it is all handled behind the scenes through network broadcasts. I then came up with an option.
What you could do is use a desktop firewall to restrict access. If you have Windows XP with service pack 2 on these admin workstations then you can edit the settings to allow only certain IP addresses to use this service. You would need to make sure these admin PCs always got the same IP addresses (either assign them statically or use DHCP reservations). Once you have the list of IP addresses, go to Start >> Settings >> Windows Firewall. Then go to the Exceptions tab, click on File and Printer Sharing, then click Edit. Now click the Change Scope button. Click the custom list button and insert those IP addresses. Hit OK and save everything. There you go.
If you don't have XP, then you'll want to get a desktop firewall product. You can set this up with virtually any firewall app (Norton Internet Security, Tiny firewall, etc).
That's the only way I could figure out how to do this.... Maybe someone else has another idea.
