Question : Cannot connect laptop to wireless router

I have a cable modem and have connected a links wireless router to this ( connected via ethernet cable ). I have a laptop with a wirless pcmcia card but cannot communicate with the wireless router, I try to go on the web and type in the IP address to configure the router but the page comes up not being displayed
