Question : Verizon Aircard 5220 fails under XP Pro / RPC service could not init / PC shuts down

WHAT I AM REALLY LOOKING FOR HERE is a reply that says "I have seen (or heard of) this EXACT problem and here is the solution."

My customer has just had a Verizon store install the Verizon Aircard (actually an AudioVox PC5220, also called Aircard 5220 sometimes or Aircard PC5220) into her Win XP Pro on a Sony Vaio PCG-TR3AP laptop). (I do not know if the OS is SP1 or SP2).

The result is the PC is completely non-useable after (30 seconds ??) as a message comes up immediately after reaching her desktop that "NT_AUTHORITY/System will shut down the PC in (???) seconds because the "RPC Service could not init" (or "initialize").

I have Googled this and found no matches to THIS problem. Others have had problems with other Verizon Aircards and maybe with this one but NOT THIS PROBLEM OR SIMILAR.

(1) I plan to shut off and reenable the RPC service (Run> services.msc) and reboot. Maybe do the same with the RPC Locator service (which is manual, not automatic and Stopped on my own PC, not the problem PC) and reboot.

(2) If that fails I will use Windows System Restore to just before the install was done and reinstall the card from scratch using the provided CD. This will probably fails as the Verizon store did the install and claims they have installed it into a "dozen" laptops and they all worked fine so I DOUBT THEY DID THE INSTALL WRONG but I will redo it myself

(3) If that fails, I will back up again with Windows System Restore AND use another different NEW shrink-wrapped PC5220 card and install it as maybe the card is bad (highly unlikley but I will try this).

PLEASE PROVIDE A WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM OTHER THAN THE ABOVE noting that on some PCs, there are no system restore points and even if there are, sometimes System Restore does not complete successfully. Which could make (2) and (3) above impossible.

NOW, YOU SAY, Mike, just go to the Device Manager or the A/R list and uninstall the card (instead of System Restore).  Did I mention that the PC will not stay up for more than something like 30 seconds so that it may not be possible to complete a Remove in the A/R list (if it is there) or a Delete in the Device Manager for this device (if it is there). BUT I WILL ALSO CONSIDER USING THOSE PLANS TO GET RID OF IT.

I CAN TRY SAFE MODE AND PRAY THAT THE NT_AUTHORITY MESSAGE does not come up and uninstall the Driver. The point is that once system restore starts it brings down the PC pretty fast (faster than NT_Authority brings it down because I have had to do this kind of thing once before and System Restore DID get rid of the NT_Authority message giving me a stable situation to work in).

Regards,
   Mike
