Question : wireless router acting up

A few weeks ago we got DSL at my house and I'm very happy about it, as its a million times faster than the old dial up.  But my computer is directly hooked up to the modem.  The upstairs computer however is hooked through a wireless connection and it sucks.  Sometimes the connection is fine and just as fast as could be expected, other times it is slow as hell until you just say forget it.  The router is an AirLink 802.11b model RTW026 and the wireless card is Blitzz NetWave Point PCI 802.11b BWI605 (maybe thats the problem, cheap crappy hardware).  And the firmware on the router and the drivers for the PCI card are both fully uptodate.  any suggestions on what's wrong are greatly appreciated
