Question : Apartment Wireless Access Points?

Hey Experts,

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help with this issue.

Issue: Existing internet on 4th floor of old mill building (brick walls everywhere, with a central elevator) needs to be shared to device located in the basement.

Currently there is no router just one pc located on the 4th floor with a broadband ISP.
There is no efficient way of running wires.
The Device (not a pc) in the basement must connect via an ethernet port not wirelessly.
I would like to secure the wireless connection so other don't use the bandwith

My first guess would be to get a wireless router and a few access points.

However i dont know what equipment to purchase. I have used linksys and netgear for most of my wireless networking and they have worked o.k. not great. The location that this installation is to take place is about 2 hours from me so i want something reliable that i will not have to go and reboot monthly. Please let me know what you would suggest. Please remember that only 2 devices will be connected and they will always be 4 floors away..

PS.. I called CDW and they suggested the Cisco WAP200 Wireless G Access Point (PN 1138177)

I realize this question has been asked before and answered however most are old and i would guess that there has been improvement to the hardware.

Sticking with Cisco gear will get you higher power radios and with an external antenna model you could get some directional antennas with a much higher gain and either place a router near or in the elevator shaft (if possible) then have an AP in the basement near or close to the elevator. I would mount the antennas in the elevator shaft (also if possible, to get around the elevator with any luck) with some LMR-400 or similar low loss cable routed back to the radios.

Otherwise you could place the antennas out the window with the router pointing down and the AP pointing up (directional antennas that is).
Without knowing the exact layout of the building and the situation its hard to say for sure, you may need to throw a second AP in the middle somewhere.
