Question : Wonderig if I can fake a DNS query with a hosts file

Background: I'm trying to perform some LDAP queries to a domain controller (that has no records in BIND DNS). Unfortunately with the vendor software we are using the only way to do this is via domain name. To make matters worse due to security/access restrictions we can't add this domain to DNS.

What I'm trying to do is somehow to fake/forward this server to think that when it tries to do a DNS query for this particular domain, it knows to forward that request to a specific server. So for example, if I try to connect to DOMAIN-A.COM, it knows to send those requests to server DC1.

Not sure if this makes sense but is something like this possible?

your question was 'can this be done?' and I advised that it wasn't, and why. This is an answer to your question. Although it isn't ther answer you were after it is still a valid and correct one.

Surely you need to accept the answer as it is correct?
