Question : cannot enable network

Installed new Dell Ispiron 530PC .Trying to set up my Virgin Broadband Modem.contacted the Virgin Tech support 4 times.at which not able to get any satisfaction, they insist that the network driver is not installed ,yet device manager says latest driver installed.I downloaded from other PC the said driver . and installed that,On my last call to Virgin ,they asked for the ip address which was 169.254.140.142. from this they say I can download the appropriate driver. double dutch to me,ALL I AM GETTING WHEN I LOOK AT THE DETAILS FOR LOCAL AREA NETWORKS IS "UNIDENTIFIED NETWORK" does any of this makes sense.hope so .,because i am being passed from one tech?to another.just repetitive  advice. I use Microsoft Vista

I have just returned to the site where network installation is ongoing,and have discovered that there is a nasty kink/bend in the cable leading into the modem from the Virgininlet in house,Virgin are sending a cable install team out to renew,if this works which I think will .i will be a happy bunny,and learned sometinh today. thank you, for your advice I did check what was said,but all appeared ok,
