Question : Connecting Vista RC1 to a Domain
|
|
Hi all,
I recently installed Vista RC1 onto a workstation and everything seems to work fine, accept that I cannot connect to a local domain. I have a Win2K3 domain controller with 30 Win2K/XP workstations connected to it. When I try to connect the Vista box, I get the following error: An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a DC in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain. I understand what the error is saying, but I don't know exactly how to fix it. What DNS server would be able to resolve local DNS names? Would that be my router maybe?
Thanks in advance

If your not too familiar with some of this stuff, I'd recommend you do this after hours or on the weekend. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it. But if your uncomforatable or don't fully understand, i'd come in when everyone is gone so you can do some testing. This *SHOULDN'T* really affect anybody considering all clients are bypassing your 2003 SBS and going straight to the internet. But when you turn on DHCP, things will start changing and you will have temporary problems until all computers restart or issue a DHCP request / renew broadcast. In the meantime, you can install the DNS and DHCP on your server; you'll probably have to restart.
After the DHCP is setup and configured and put live, disable DHCP on your router. Then issue this command from all client computers. (or better yet, just restart the computers) start --> run --> cmd --> ipconfig/release Then ipconfig/renew
