Question : Excel Password Website Problem

I need any help that EE can provide!  We have a business website that includes a number of spreadsheets for download by our customers.  This is the first time we have tried to upload a spreadsheet created in Excel 2003 (not exactly on the front of the curve here!).  The problem is that when the linked file is selected for opening, the user is prompted to enter a username and password for the website.  This is being posted on the public site, so a username and password is not required.  Any clues on what could be causing the prompt when opening the Excel document in a new window?

if the file has a link to another file within your office - it may have been prompting you while you tested it in your office as it was linked to to a share that you werent connected to - which may also explain why it is now working.
have you tested it from a computer completely outside your network? (sounds like a good excuse to go home early)
