Question : DNS server order

Hi,

We've got a BIND DNS server on our LAN to provide names and aliases for local services and to cache names for Internet hosts.

I've configured clients to use this server as the primary DNS server and the ISP's server as the secondary DNS server.

The problem is that sometimes clients seem to just resolve against the secondary server and consequently fail to resolve any local names. This is despite the fact that the DNS server has never failed and seems to respond quickly even under heavy load (in my tests at least).

When this happens I generally just restart the client. My question is: is there a way to manipulate the DNS server without resorting to this?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Leon...

Answer : DNS server order

Hi,
You didn't specify your operating systems, but from Windows 2000 and up for both servers and workstations, the general rule is to always set your DNS to only your internal (usually Active Directory integrated) DNS server and let it to the forwarding for external queries.

Hope this helps,
Alan
