Question : Trying to add a Windows 2000 Server to a Novell 4.11
|
|
We have a four server network. The main file and print server is a Netware 4.11. One server is an NT 4 running our business system application using NDS for NT 1.1. Two other servers run Lotus Notes Domino.
We need to add a Windows 2000 Server to run the updated business system software. Can this be done?

JWolhuter, I respectfully disagree. And I believe you disagreed with yourself when you stated " I do not think that NDS for NT is supported on Windows 2000".
I'll go with my recommendation based on the assumption that the NW server will remain at 4.11 and there will be a WIN200 server with AD. Load the NW client using custom install and IPX only, deselect all unused options. Make the WIN2000 the first in provider order. Forget NDS for NT. Setup the users in AD with the same user name and passwords as Netware to eliminate duplicate login screens. Running a WIN2000 server with NT4 servers is not a problem as long as the user stays with mixed mode and sets up the trusts. Novell has TIDS on setting up logons based on several user options for Windows workstations.
There are alternate, and probably more efficient ways to setup this network, however, the use of NW4.11 precludes most of them, and it does take quite a bit of up front learning and testing. Keeping the NW servers and WIN2000 servers ignorant of each other may not be the most efficient for those with the time, but may be for those just hacking together multiple systems with limited time and money. My main network is several NW6 servers, two WIN2000 servers running financial apps, a Unix box for e:mail and a Linus box for Intranet. All printing is through NW and it all runs very well without any interaction between the NW edirectory and AD. IMHO.
