A subnet is way to break up your network into smaller more easly maintained networks. Each subnet is a separate entity and can be maintained as such. It is very common to break up an entire organization into smaller subnets engineering, marketing, sales may all be on separate subnets. An example would be to break a class c network (206.69.116.1-255) into two networks. To do this you would use a subnet of 255.255.255.128. When this is done you have to distinct networks. 206.69.116.1-128 and 206.69.116.129-255. If you wanted you could break these down further with a subnet of 255.255.255.240 or what ever you are looking for.
