Question : DNS group policy application to Vista
I am trying to assign a DNS group policy to a windows vista machine on my network Per MS article
http://support.microsoft.c
om/kb/2947
85
I want to assign specific DNS server IP addresses to the workstation. after creating the policy, i ran gpupdate /force on the vista machine and then GPresult to see that the policy was in fact applied. However, when I go to my tcpip network settings, my DNS server entries have not changed.
Is there something I am missing? can I not apply thenew 2003 DNS GP settings to a vista machine?
I know that I can use DHCP to do this if need be but the ultimate idea is that I want the vista machine(s) to have specific dns entries that differ from the rest of the network so I really want to use GP to accomplish this
Answer : DNS group policy application to Vista
I can tell you now that such a configuration will wreak havoc on your Vista workstations which are members of the domain. Since DNS is a critical component which is used extensively by Active Directory - for resolving everything from FSMO role holders, Global Catalogs to Domain Controllers and Time Servers - any attempt at adding an ISP nameserver into the DNS server list at the client side could potentially cause you to lose connectivity to the domain, possibly even causing severly long (several hour) logins and domain activities.
It is for this reason that no ISP DNS servers must ever be present on workstations. The only place ISP DNS servers are specified on your Active Directory network are within the "Forwarders" section of the DNS Server MMC on the DNS server(s) itself.
