Use this PDF for a quick start: http://docs.forticare.com/fgt/archives/qsg/01-28005-0031-20041206_FortiGate-50A_QuickStart_Guide.pdf#search=%22Fortigate%2050A%20%2Bconfiguring%22
Or this one goes more in depth: http://docs.forticare.com/fgt/install/01-30001-0265-20060410_FortiGate-50_series_Install_Guide.pdf#search=%22Fortigate%2050A%20%2Bconfiguring%22
Can you physically not locate the RJ45-Serial Cable?
You can configure them one of 2 ways..one is the command line, other is through the web browser(don't forget to use HTTPS://). You should be able to find the default IP's on the Quickstart guide.
Easiest way to do it is set it up right on a PC... 1.Connect the FortiGate-50A internal interface to a management computer Ethernet interface. Use a cross-over Ethernet cable to connect the devices directly. Use straight-through Ethernet cables to connect the devices through a hub or switch. 2.Configure the management computer to be on the same subnet as the internal interface of the FortiGate-50A. To do this, change the IP address of the management computer to 192.168.1.2 and the netmask to 255.255.255.0. 3. To access the FortiGate web-based manager, start Internet Explorer and browse to https://192.168.1.99 (remember to include the s in https://). 4. Type admin in the Name field and select Login.
And then you're in. i've set up a few of these, they're not bad. Kevin
