Question : Router vs modem problems

Ive been trying to workout why my internet is soo slow.

I can download files, initially at around 60 kbps, this drops to around 16kbps within 15 seconds, and then stays at around 16 kbps.

If I start another download at the same time it will start at around 16kbps, and then average around there.

I have tried downloading from different servers and used the speed test tool provided by BT (www.speedtester.bt.com).

So try and workout the problem.

I initially thought it was the router, as I had a belkin router, I have swapped this with a linksys, and performed software updates, I have replaced all cables, with no sucess.

So as far as I could tell the problem was with the the BT line, however when I phoned they asked me to plug the USB modem in, and this solved the problem, using the same filters and cable.

So my problem is, what is going on? I cant understand where the problem is, and according to my ISP (who arnt very helpful) the problem is solved.

Please help!

Answer : Router vs modem problems

im sure that your ISP has locked your bandwidth to 16KBps. If that is the SLA with the ISP then they are right. If the ISP has guaranteed you more, then its definitely an SLA violation.

Moreover, no ISP will guarantee bandwidth beyond their gateway. If you access anything in their network, you will get the complete bandwidth.Downloads from other sites depends on your ISPs upstream and their bandwidth and how they have routed you.
I feel its just a bandwidth management at the ISP side thats troubling you.
