Question : slow copying from windows 2003 server
|
|
we experience slow downloading from our win 2003 r2 server: network consists of 40 PC's most with windows 2000
2 servers: server1= windows 2003 Server no SP server2=windows 2003 server R2 SP2 switch is 3com 4250t - 48x100Mbit + 2x1Gbit ports
the servers are connected to the 1Gig ports
here is some info from testing
copying was initiated allways from the client PC
SMB compying: 60 MB of files from Server1 to windows 2000 without antivirus - 15s to windows xp without antivirus - 39s to windows xp with antivirus - 60s
190 MB of files from Server2 to windows 2000 without antivirus - 275s to windows xp with or without antivirus - not measurable, approx 100 minutes
FTP copying
190 MB of files from Server2 to windows xp without antivirus - 40-120 kb/s transfer rate to Server1 - 10s to windows 2000 without antivirus - 38s
Uploading the same 190 MB of files from a win 2000 machine to Server2 took 28s
the server2 is running microsoft sql and a antivirus nod32 (which i plan to uninstall tonight) we came to this problem when we brought a new windows xp computer to the network and tried to download the backuped data to it
Question: what can cause such client and server speicific slowdown?

Hi,
In addition to my fellow expert's comments, I'd simply check the NIC's configuration.
Nowadays, we have intelligent NICs, intelligent switches, and intelligent software. Unfortunately, from time to time, somthing screws up with no apparent reason, and you have to set up things manually.
Here's what I would try :
Replace autosense with 100 Mb Half Duplex both on the faulty server and on the switch it's attached to. Check if results are better. If needed, also force that speed on the client which initiates the transaction.
Just my 2 cents, but it solved many problems in my environment...
HTH Cheers
