Question : Max length of a Cat5 cable?

Hi,

We're having trouble with our new cable from one house to my apartment over the garage.  We wired it today, but are having trouble getting it to work.

We are trying to do 250 feet.  But the cable is outdoors, for the most part.

Thanks for you urgent reply.

Bob

Answer : Max length of a Cat5 cable?

The limit is 300 feet (100 meters, more precisely).  But be warned - you could fry your equipment with a lightning strike.  There is such a thing as outdoor Cat5 cable, but the safe thing to use is a Fiber cable (much greater limit on distance and no electrical conductivity - no danger with lightning) and a couple of media converters.
