Question : smartphone external storage

Hi, I'm interested in connecting smartphone to some portable external hard disks, via USB.
Is it possible at all, can you reference specific model who are able to do it like Nokia, HTC, Samsung, and if it's not possible whats the best alternative in connecting smartphones to some robust external storage that is portable? Thanks

Your smartphone must have "usb host" functionality.
Only model I know is fujitsu siemens pocket loox.

Why normal storage card is not enough for you? Most of the smartphones can use it.
