Question : DHCP warning event 1007

I have a DSL connection running on a NetGear FA311/FA312 ethernet card on Windows 2000 Pro.
Each time i boot i get a dhcp warning 1007, and it takes about one minute to resolve it:

Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address 00075B045FB3.  The IP address being used is 169.254.235.23

How do i fix this?

Thanks

Answer : DHCP warning event 1007

iamari, your netgear card has not been given a static IP address, and its default settings is to use DHCP. Hence when it boots it always look for DHCP server (which explains why it takes longer time), and its a feature in Win2k products to self assign an IP address when it cannot find any dhcp server from 169.254.0.0 subnets. This feature is call APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing)

To fix it, simply put a dummy IP address in like maybe 172.23.1.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Gateway leave it blank.

but do take note of ensuring your DSL router Ethernet interface is also configured with an IP address of 172.23.1.X so that they both can "talk" to each other.

Hope this helps

Cheers
