Question : Unable to change Computer Name
|
|
Okay. I've got sixteen new PC's for an ICT Suite, and have (finally) finished ghosting them all to our standard image. However, when I try to change the name of the computer (they're all running Windows XP) and join the (Win2K) Domain, I get the following error on FIVE of them. (the other's all worked perfectly - well one didn't, so I re-ghosted it, and now it's OK - and yes, I've tried re-ghosting the others, but to no avail) anyway, after getting the welcome to the domain message I get this error:
"The following error occured attempting to change the computer name to "LETO": (the domain "TITAN" was joined under the old computer name "DELL-EMW")
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation."
Now the ghost image automatically creates a random name for each computer ("DELL-XXX" - were "XXX" are random characters). and are all unique. Curiously, the new computer name (i.e. The one I want) will then appear in the Directory, but the client machine is still called DELL_WHATEVER. I have managed to force the name change, but removing it from the domain, changing the name and joining a (fake) Workgroup. then with the new name, THEN re-join the domain, however, it then takes up to 20mins after entering uid/pwrd to get to the desktop - obviously, not acceptable.
Any thoughts?
