Question : Sock and proxy server

There are webbase training courses that we need to take but couldn't.
What I am told is that I have to install and configure SOCKs for this to work. We have proxy and firewall on the same pc with wingate 5.2 on win2k box.
Is sock the only option to goes with? If no, then what is the best approach for us.
If yes, can you show me a steps nesessary to configure it.
It is very urgen.
Thanks,

Andy

Answer : Sock and proxy server

explanation from a website:

Socks Proxy

SOCKS is an Internet standard for basic connectivity through a firewall.

Many Internet products that have the capability to connect through a firewall, support the SOCKS standard. These include applications such as; most WWW browsers, some FTP client applications, some IRC applications etc. Client software supporting this standard can generally operate transparently, meaning they appear to be directly connected to the Internet.

one of the functions of wingate is a socks proxy.... so you are all set.. just configure your browser to use it.

See http://www.internetaccessmonitor.com/eng/support/docs/wingate/WinGateFeatures.php for a list of wingate features.

see http://www.internetaccessmonitor.com/eng/support/docs/wingate/SocksProxy.php for more information about the socks proxy.

to use it with internet explorer , go to "tools", "internet options", "Connections", "Lan Settings", select "Use a proxy server....." , click "Advanced", deselect "Use the same proxy for all protocols" , in the box after "Socks" enter the ip of your wingate server and in the next field (port number) enter 1080, wich is the default, it is possible that the server was configure to use another port. Check  in the management console of your wingate server.
