Question : Wireless connection signal strength

Hi guys!

I just bought some 11 Mbps wireless stuff (a w-nic and an ap (accesspoint)). When I place the computer containing the w-nic real close to the access point it gets a maximum signal strength of 70 %. When I move the machine up to my room I can get a strength of 20%. Are there any possibilities to upgrade the signal strength? Are there any places where the access point should not be placed? What signal strength is required for a consitent connection?
