Question : cisco switch monitoring

Hi

I hope somebody can help me. Basically I'm having an issue with two servers. The problem is that the two servers randomly freeze when connecting to port on a remote server, during this freeze other servers are quite happily able to continue with their operations. What I have found is that these two servers send out syn packets to the remote server, but it seems as though the remote server doesn't receive them.

When running a span port on the remote server, I can see the packets coming into the switch but they don't appear to be delivered to the remote server. It looks as though they are being discarded in the switch. Multiple resends by the originating server still fails to solve the problem.

Can someone give me some help with this. What I'd like to know is how can I monitor the packets through the switch (I have a cisco 3500xl switch)? Why are packets being dropped by the switch? what are my possible debugging techniques I can use?

Thanks
Shaz

Answer : cisco switch monitoring

Look at the interface stats on the switch for the server ports, perhaps you have a routing issue, or perhaps you have errors on
your switch ports, bad cable etc ....... need more information on your setup.

You can monitor a port on a switch via a span session:

Here is good reference even though itis for a 6500:
