Question : What is the best ip to use for the DNS?
|
|
My network is based on a Lynksys Router as a backbone.
The adaptor on my computer has its own Ip address 192.168.1.xxx When I configure the DNS on the network adaptor on my computer I have found that I can use several ip addresses. as follows
1) I can get a DNS that works by typing in www.whatismyip.com and using that number that I get for example like 68.113.42.224
Or....
2)I can open a dos prompt and type in
Ipconfig /all and use the two DNS values at the bottom of the information listed. for example like 24.196.64.39 24.196.64.49 And enter them as a primary and a secondary DNS value.
What is the best way to configure the DNS values of the TCP/IP settings of the network cards and why for 500pts.
Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge with me. Thomas Starich Monroe, Wisconsin

The most appropriate way is to use the IPs provided by your ISP, which is more than likey the 24. addresses (you have a cable modem, right).
I'd let the linksys router provide the DNS addresses as they are provided to it by the cable company. If the cable company changes them, then you won't have DNS services if you set them statically.
