Question : leased line security

Good Day,

A friend runs a small west coast office with headquarters in NY. They had been using VPN to access e-mail and transfer data. For whatever reason, the VPN would go down several times a day. I helped with setting up a broadband router, set up a network printer etc., basic SOHO stuff

Somebody suggested that if my friend had a T1, he would get the security he needs without VPN (money is no object).

While I don't doubt this offhand, my searches haven't discovered a nice explanation of the why and how.

Thanks

Answer : leased line security

It's the difference between and internal connection and an external one.  With VPN, typically your communications are going over the Internet.  That means that your data travels through any number of relays before it reaches the intended site.  Any one of the people (ISP's) who manage the relays could potentially read your data.  Since you have no way of knowing who that is, there's no way you can be sure you can trust every connection down the line.  VPN offers you the ability to encrypt that communication so you don't have to worry about it.

With a T1 line, the line is leased to you from a specific vendor.  All your data goes over their network only.  So, if you trust the vendor not to snoop, and be secure enough not to get hacked, then you can be reasonably sure that no one is reading your confidential data.
