what I would really consider is actually a bit more sofisticated, but may work better for you. Depending on your host you may actually have access to SimpleScripts or Fantastico De Luxe. Both of these services basically give you the ability to install prebuilt web applications that will do what you are looking for, and even more.
The applications that I would suggest as possible solutions are Drupal or Joomla. Depending on exactly what you want to accomplish with your website, either of these work very well.
The very best part of all is that both are free.
There are other free solutions as well, some are way more complicated but then there are many that have lots of very nice features.
