Question : Cannot ping self
|
|
I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP Pro SP2. Name is Dell with IP 192.168.1.2 Wife has a Compaq 5230 running XP Home SP2. Name is Darlene with IP 192.168.1.3 Netgear router is IP 192.168.1.1 Direcway modem is IP 192.168.0.1 Linksys LAN/USB adapter is 192.168.1.77
I can ping the router, modem, LAN/USB adapter, and 127.0.0.1 but cannot ping Dell, 192.168.1.2, Darlene, or 192.168.1.3.
I have done:
ipconfig/release ipconfig/renew ipconfig/all

Interestingly, when I type net view, after a several second delay I get the following:
System error 6110 has occured The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.
However, the first time I tried piping the results, I got:
net view > c:\temp.txt Server Name Remark ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- \\DARLENE Compaq Presario 5230 US \\DELL Roy's Dell Inspiron 8600 The command completed successfully.
But the next time I tried piping it I got the System error 6110.
The rest of the net commands appear to work properly.
I get the exact same reults when I try pinging and the net command from the Darlene machine.
We are running Windows Live OneCare with Firewall set to Auto on both machines.
This is an extremely irritating problem. After getting it fixed it will work well for months, then all of a sudden it happens again. I can never remember how I fixed it the last time. Help will be very much appreciated.

Answer : Cannot ping self

Either the Windows firewall or the OneCare Firewall maybe blocking some or all services. ICMP (ping) is commonly blocked. Can you try disabling the firewalls to see if that is the case? I assume you are behind a router, making it safe to do so ??
