Question : Unable to browse network, but can ping the IP address
|
|
Hi,
My PC is networked with 40 others, all using Win XP SP1. Today when I tried to browse the network places, windows came up with error: "Unable to browse the network. The network is not present or not started"
These are the Event Viewer log entries that maybe connected to the problem: - The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA). - Could not load RDR device driver. - Could not load Rdbss device driver. - The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: MRxSmb - The Computer Browser service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error: The service has returned a service-specific error code. - The Alerter service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error: The service has returned a service-specific error code. - The Workstation service terminated with service-specific error 2250 (0x8CA). - Failed to initialize DmServer service. The service is not running. Error: C000003A - Failed to open event VxKernel2VoldEvent, Error=C000003A. - DCOM got error "The dependency service or group failed to start. " attempting to start the service BITS with arguments "" in order to run the server: {4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097}
I tried to use system restore, but did not solve the problem. Can someone please point out if the error is related to hardware or software problem? Thanks in advance for your kind help.
Regards, Ben

This is not a TCP/IP protocol issue, and installing IPX cannot help. You need to determine how to repair the Workstation service, which is a part of the NetBIOS component which *uses* lower-level protocols such as TCP and IPX.
I would suggest removing the NetBIOS component, rebooting, and reinstalling that component.
(Also check to make sure that your system is not infected with a virus....)
