Question : XBOX 360 and MAC laptop can not BOTH connect to internet
|
|
My customer reports that EITHER her MAC laptop less than a year old (so running 10.4.9) OR her Xbox 360 (6 months old) can connect to the internet but NOT BOTH. (In case you don't know XBOX 360 is made by Microsoft and must run an OS that is related to Windows XP in major ways). If one or the other ONLY connects to the internet, they can get consistent internet but not both at the same time. Her router is an Airport Extreme (AE) about 8 months old (not the NEW Airport Extreme). In case you are not familiar with the AE, it is a general purpose router with multiple ethernet cable plugs in the back for wired connects AND wireless connect capability too (Wireless G and Wireless B). Both PCs and MACs can connect to it.
The Xbox 360 is wired to the router and the MAC is wireless to the router.
Now, I suspect that MACs and PCs usually have no trouble sharing a router. I have seen that at a few accounts (BUT most of my accounts do not have both types of computers). Does any respondent here know of A LIMITED SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH MAC's and PC's kick each other off the internet when they both connect. (Or, if you will not accept that dexcription, then MAC's and XBOX 360's). NOTE:XBOX 360 IS A GAMING MACHINE MADE BY MICROSOFT; IT'S OS MUST BE SIMILAR TO WINDOWS XP.
THERE IS MORE: A few months ago, at another customer site I had a MAC laptop wireless to a Netgear router and a PC wireless (at first) and then later, wired, to the same Netgear router THAT SITE HAD EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM and despite many many things I tried to fix this (with the help of a MAC guru) it did not get fixed.
BECAUSE OF THIS prveious experience and the above, I believe there REALLY ARE problems with MACs and PCs (or PC-line computers like the XBOX 360) sharing a router. NOT ALWAYS BUT UNDER SOME CIRCUMSTANCES.
CAN ANY EE EXPERT TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS SO the Xbox 360 and the MAC laptop can both access the internet at the same time? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ADDTIONAL NOTES; At www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm#Routers , you will see a list of Xbox Compatible routers. The Airport Extreme is NOT on the list. I consider that irrelevant to my EE Question here BECAUSE (1) The XBOX 360 CAN connect to the internet if the MAC laptop is not also wireless to the AE. (2) My suspicion is that the table's creators did not even consider the Airport Extreme as a general purpose router. And it is NOT listed in the incompatible router list at the link either. Nonetheless, the lack of the AE being in the table does "muddy the water" a bit here. Also, FYI, I believe, "Xbox connecting to the internet" is called "connecting to Xbox Live" in Xbox terminology. opening ports wont make no difference.
Try setting static IPs on both the MAC and the Xbox. You could try it on the router first, but I personally would set them static on the machines themselves.
I presume you know where to do that within the mac, within the xbox it is under settings - network settings i think (not got one in front at me atm).
Also, check that the router is in NAT mode (some routers can act as basically a modem), and try plugging up 2 macs / pc's without the xbox and see what results you get there.
